Will not won't

Contractions are rather straight forward.
Can not = Can't
Do not = Don't
Should not = Shouldn't
etc
Just stick the two words together,
and replace the O in not with an apostrophe.
But what the heck is WON'T ???
Will not should become Willn't
Well, it is because will not was built from woll + not,
which assimilated to wonnot and then to won't.
The use of woll comes from the
Proto-Indo-European stem wel- or wol-,
reflected still in the German verb wollen: to will, desire, wish.
