The Poll

Last week's poll question was,
"Do you have a calculator
I could borrow?"
A.) "Yes I will call you later."
B.) "I remember you borrowed it last week."
C.) "Sorry, I left mine at home."
Well the correct answer was C
but you knew that because it got 100% of the votes!
A & B are incorrect because they don't answer the question.
The poll doesn't seem to be so popular so it's going to take a break for a while.
If you really love the poll question
just post a comment below and I'll put it back up.

And the winner is...

Last weeks poll question was;
"Shirley ____ drive to work but now she rides her bicycle."
And the correct answer, with a whopping 75% was;
"used to"
It was a tricky one because when we say it,
it sounds like "use to".
When D and T sounds are together,
the D is often dropped.

Drum roll please...

Last week’s poll question was a TOEIC style question,
“The guests were amazed
by the ______ statues in the garden.”
1. Colour (Noun)
2. Colourful (Adjective)
3. Colours (Plural Noun)
4. Colourfully (Adverb)
It was a 50/50 split between
Colourful & Colourfully
And the correct answer was 2. Colourful.
As the word “statues” is a noun
it should be preceded by an adjective.
Thanks to everyone who voted
& good luck with this week's poll.

And the winner is...

Last week's poll question was ...

"Which is the most grammatically correct sentence?"

And the most popular choice
with 100% of the votes was

"I am going to the store"

Which is also the correct answer!
Well done to everyone who voted.

The other answers

I'm go the store.
I am go to the store.
I going to the store.
I am to the store go.

Were all grammatically challenged.

("I go to store."* Is correct if you use "store" as a verb,
but it's and odd sounding sentence,
and doesn't really fit with the other options)

The Poll

Last week's poll question was I or Me?
''The class activities were difficult for Greg and ____.''

I don't know.
Me (2 votes)
I (3 votes)
Both answers are ok. (1 vote)

The correct answer was ME!

''The class activities were difficult for Greg and me.''

Let's try the tip I presented last week on the blog and pretend that the other person in the sentence was not there.
''The class activities were difficult for me.''
Now we can clearly see that I could not be the correct answer.
Good job everyone!!

The Poll

We ran the poll for the last 2 weeks because we were so disappointed with the number of voters...
(or lack thereof)
:*(

Please try your best on the poll as it is meant to be a fun way to learn and interact with your teachers!!

The question was I or Me?
''My best friend and _____ are going to the movies tonight.''

I (2 votes)
Me (1 vote)
I don't know.
Both answers are possible.

The correct answer was I!
''My best friend and I are going to the movies tonight.''

As both of these are pronouns used to refer to oneself, deciding which one to use can be a little confusing. ''I'' should be used for the subject of the sentence, the person doing the action (verb). ''Me'' should be used for the object of the sentence.

If you are still not sure which to use, it might be a good idea to pretend as if the other person in the sentence was not there.

For example, ''My best friend and I are going to the movies tonight'', becomes ''I am going to the movies tonight''.

''Becky thought she'd seen Dad and me at the store'', becomes ''Becky thought she'd seen me at the store''.

*Let's try this one again on this week's poll.

The Poll

Last week's poll question was a tricky one!

Which animal completes the idiom:
''Straight from the _____ mouth?''

dog's (3 votes)
donkey's
bird's (1 vote)
horse's (2 votes)
elephant's
whale's
cow's
pig's
monkey's
turkey 's (1 vote)

The correct answer is HORSE'S!

Straight from the horse's mouth!

We're gonna need a bigger boat!

The poll question last week was,
"Which is the biggest?"
Large
Huge
Massive
Enormous
Gargantuan
Colossal
Gigantic
Titanic
Humongous
Well the most popular answers were,
Enormous with 40%
and
Gargantuan with 60%
They all just mean really big.
There is no one answer as to which one is the biggest.
So just choose the one that you think sounds BIGGER!
And according to our poll GARGANTUAN sounds the biggest!
Thanks to everyone who voted.

Studio Ghibli!!!!

Last week the poll question was:

What are your favorite Studio Ghibli movies?

Nausicaa of the Valley of the Wind (1 vote)
Castle in the Sky
Grave of the Fireflies (1 vote)
My Neighbour Totoro (2 votes)
Kiki's Delivery Service (3 votes)
Porco Rosso (1 vote)
Ocean Waves
Pom Poko
Princess Mononoke (2 votes)
Spirited Away (3 votes)
Ponyo on the Cliff by the Sea (2 votes)
Tales from Earthsea (1 vote)

As many of my students know I have been trying to watch all of the Studio Ghibli movies and love talking about them in class. I was surprised by many of the votes on last weeks poll because the most popular ones were Kiki's Delivery service (which I voted for) and Spirited Away (which is not really close to being my favorite....). However, I still have many to watch! What do you recommend for me to watch next?

Friday, November 12, 2010

Candy shaped like skulls, pumpkins, bats, worms

What Halloween costume character has Rachel Never dressed up as?

A witch
A dog
A clown
A kangaroo
A smurf
A cheerleader
Cleopatra

With 50% of the votes choosing a smurf!
You couldn't be more wrong!! I was a smurf when I was 3 years old. I was Rainbow Bright in preschool. I was a dog in elementary school. I was a cheerleader in middle school. I was a clown a few times. I was Cleopatra in University. And finally, I was a kangaroo just last year!

That leaves a witch! I have never dressed up as a witch!! Perhaps this year... well you will have to find out at the party!! :D
