English is ƃuısnɟuoɔ

If you thought English was confusing, here are some sentences that will make your mind boggle even more!

It is only in the English language that people recite at a play and play at a recital.
English muffins weren’t invented in England or French fries in France.
A bass was painted on the head of the bass drum.
The human race has been running for a great many centuries now – but we’re not tired yet.

Now here are some questions:

How can ‘You’re so cool’ and ‘You’re not so hot’ be different?
Why are ‘A Wise man’ and ‘A Wise guy’ opposites?
There is no egg in eggplant nor ham in hamburger; neither apple nor pine in pineapple.
How come Writers write but Fingers don’t fing?
And Grocers don’t groce and Hammers don’t ham?
Why is it that whether you sit down or sit up, the results are the same?
If you take an Oriental person and spin him around several times, does he become disoriented?

Now did this make you more pǝsnɟuoɔ?

Word of the Week

1: incapable of being
    or reformed

2: not manageable

3: unalterable,

Neil was such an incorrigible slob that his parents eventually gave up nagging him about cleaning his room and simply told him to keep the door closed.

"Incorrigible" has been part of English since the 14th century. Back then, it was used to describe people who were morally depraved, but now it is most often applied to people who merely have bad habits. Is there a "corrigible?" Yes, indeed, we've used "corrigible" in the sense of "capable of being set right; reparable" (as in "a corrigible defect" and "a corrigible sinner") since the 15th century. Both words are from Latin "corrigere," which means "to correct" and which is also the source of our word "correct."

Father's Day is Just Around the Corner

Have you all decided on a gift for Father's Day yet?  I'm sure it is one of the toughest gifts to pick.  I always had trouble deciding on a gift.  I'm not really good at giving ideas, but here are some gifts NOT to give your father.

No, No's!

I just got my first Father's Day gift from my daughter today and was really happy!  My daughter made my face on a plate.  It was really cute.

Gummy Bear DEKAI mode!

I love gummy bears but seeing that big one kind of makes me feel sick!

Ice cream some more....

Ice creams in Australia are a bit different to those in Japan.
Here are some examples.

 The simple yet classic
"Rainbow Paddle Pop"
The "Bubble O' Bill" is popular with kids because of its bubble gum candy nose.
Perhaps the best name for an ice cream in the history of the universe. The "Golden Gaytime" is a delicious treat that has survived from a time when 'gay' just meant 'happy'.

I scream for ice cream

It's getting hot,
time to cool down with something cold.

 I like the occasional
 "iced lolly" myself.
(These are some of my favorites in Japan.)

How about you?
What do you like to eat

1a : marked by or disposed to doing good
1b : organized for the purpose of doing good
2 : marked by or suggestive of goodwill
Jody's grandmother was a benevolent lady who enjoyed performing random acts of kindness for both her family and strangers.

Someone who is "benevolent" genuinely wishes other people well, which is not surprising if you know the word's history. "Benevolent" can be traced back to Latin "bene," meaning "good," and "velle," meaning "to wish." Other descendants of "velle" in English include "volition" ("the act or power of making one's choices or decisions"), "voluntary," and the rare word "velleity" (meaning either "the lowest degree of volition" or "a slight wish or tendency"). There is also one more familiar "velle" descendant — "malevolent," the antonym of "benevolent," a word describing one who is disposed to doing ill instead of good.

Does anyone know why this is strange?  So this basically tells me that I can spit or throw garbage from the car as long as there is a "proper" place?  Haha, I love this rule!

Radiation Detectors in Cell Phones?!!

Softbank is releasing a cell phone that can detect radiation levels.  Wow!  I mean how worried can you get?  I guess if you are living in the Tohoku area, you might be interested in this phone.  With the government covering up information and not releasing accurate information, you have to take matters into your own hands.  Good job Softbank!  Are any of you going to get this phone?

Check out this article for more information and a video.
