What's the problem?

This was written on a sign in front of a dry cleaners.

"We do not tear your clothing with machinery.
We do it carefully by hand."

Can anyone tell me what the problem is?

  1. Does the sign mean dry cleaners do not tear our clothing roughly, but gently tear it?

  2. Yes Masa that's right. Well done.
What they wanted to say was.
"We do not use machinery that damages your clothes. Instead we wash them carefully by hand to avoid any damage."
But as you said, it sounds more like.
"We do not damage your clothes with machinery, instead we damage it carefully by hand."
HA! I don't think I will go to THAT dry cleaners...
