Idiom of the day!

As I try to learn one kanji every day, I will try to post one English idiom for you.

The first example is "as the crow flies"

Which means, in a straight line from one place to another.

For example

"The school is 5km from my house by road,
but only 2km as the crow flies."

  1. I wonder why "crow" ?
If I were the person who invented this idiom,
I would use "as the pigeon flies."
Hmm... Let me check my dictionary...
I found it! It says that because crows fly straight toward the destination.

  2. Wow yeah I had never thought about why it's a crow & not some other bird. Crows fly straighter than other birds? I didn't know that. Just yesterday I bought a book about Japanese birds. I will have to see what other interesting information I can find.
