Custom #7: Eh?
Canadians use the word eh? for checking to see that the listener understands what is being said and is still interested in and paying attention to the conversation. For example: ''It's four kilometres away, eh, so I have to go by bike.'' Here eh? is used to confirm the listener is actually listening and invite them to give a supportive noise such as ''Mm'' or ''Oh'' or ''Okay''.
Eh? can also be added to a statement to turn it into a question. For example: ''The weather is nice, eh?'' Here eh? is used to ask the listener if they agree that it is a nice day.
Other usages, although technically questions, are said as statements. ''I know, eh?'', ''Yeah, eh?'' ~ expressing agreement, and ''I know. Eh?'' ~ expressing an excited agreement.
